Columbia Falls AFS is the receiver site for the east coast Over the Horizon Backscatter (OTH-B) radar array. For more details on the history of the OTH-B radar sites, please check out my page about the transmitter site.
To reach the Columbia Falls AFS from Bangor, take I395 east to Route 1A towards Ellsworth. At the top of the hill by Darling's Auto Mall and Home Depot, turn left and take Route 1 east towards Hancock and Sullivan. Turn left on 182 and bypass Sullivan and Steuben. 182 will dump back out on Route 1 near Cherryfield and Harrington. Take Route 1 east into Columbia Falls. Turn left on to Tibbetstown Road. You'll cross some railroad tracks and then the road will curve to the left. Follow the road straight back through the blueberry barrens. If you stray off the pavement, you screwed up. Tibbetstown Road becomes Nash Timber Road. Nash Timber Road forks to the left and then becomes Bombing Range Road. You should see some signs for a Native American Game preserve, go through a small wooded area and then come up over a hill and be staring straight at the main complex for the receiver site.
Just as with my other pages, the pictures you see here were taken during multiple visits. The first was the spring of 2008 and the second was the winter of 2009. Earlier images aren't that great because my digital camera wasn't the greatest and it was a crappy day.
